Weatherization Showcase

OCTOBER 29, 2014

Today MORPC showcased its residential energy efficiency services at the home of Robert and Julia Sims. Also known as weatherization, these services are free for income-eligible residents in Franklin County thanks to funding from Columbus Gas of Ohio, American Electric Power Ohio and Ohio Development Services Agency.

The showcase provides the opportunity for community leaders and the public to see MORPC’s weatherization services in action. Stations set-up throughout the home demonstrated the insulation process and combustion analysis testing as well as devices such as an infrared thermography camera and a blower door.

MORPC performs audits in homes across Franklin County to identify energy improvements that help families reduce energy bills and strengthen their homes. In the Sims’ home, the following improvements were made:

  • Extra insulation added to the attic
  • Building envelope tightened with air sealing and sidewall insulation
  • Digital thermostat installed
  • New dryer vent
  • Water pipes insulated
  • Replaced safety feature on water heater
  • Carbon monoxide alarms installed
  • New efficient furnace and ENERGY STAR refrigerator installed

Additionally MORPC performs critical checks of combustion appliances to test for leaks and install safety measures throughout the homes.

The average household sees a 28% reduction in energy bills. Over the past 25 years, MORPC has serviced more than 15,000 households making homes safer, more energy efficient and comfortable for families throughout the year.

“Today, we’re feeling the chill of colder temperatures and many of us remember the polar vortex of last winter,” said Christina O’Keeffe, Director of Energy & Air Quality for MORPC. “Now is the time for those interested in these programs to call us at MORPC and explore how your home can waste less and be more comfortable.”
