10 Facts You Need to Know About Census Takers
- Census takers will only be going to houses that either DID NOT return their forms or sent them in late.
- If you submitted your form late – after April 19th – you should still answer the door and give your information to the census taker.
- Census takers will have official IDs and might have Census bags – no uniforms.
- They will not ask for social security or bank account numbers or to be let into the house.
- They will only questions that are already on the 2010 Census form:
- How many people usually live in the home
- The names, age, race, gender of everyone in the household
- Whether the home is owned or rented
- The information they collect is confidential. They are not allowed to share this information with anyone outside of the Census Bureau.
- Responding is a federal law. The census taker won’t arrest you, but you should know this really is not a voluntary action.
- Census takers will make up to 3 attempts per household – each time, they will leave a door hanger with a number to call to schedule a future visit.
- You should be aware that the census taker will be back if they didn’t talk to you.
- If you’re not sure the person at the door is an official Census employee, call the Detroit Regional Census Center to confirm that the census taker is employed by the Census Bureau: 1-866-861-2010.
