Resources for Improving the Environment at Your School

Create a Natural Garden Landscape

Prairies once covered enormous stretches of land in North America. In Ohio, these native plants thrive without fertilizers, pesticides, frequent mowing or irrigation.

Grass lawns may look green; however, they are not very kind to our environment. Lawn chemicals run off into streams and lead to water pollution. Watering lawns aggravates this problem and wastes water during times of drought. Lawn maintenance also contributes to central Ohio's air pollution troubles.  A typical power lawnmower pollutes as much in one hour as driving a car for 20 miles.

The following document includes information and resources to help you create a native garden for your school where students can learn a variety of lessons first-hand through interacting with our natural world.
