Central Ohio Commuter Challenge Taking Place Through July 27

July 13, 2018

After being met with great success the past few years, the Central Ohio Commuter Challenge has returned, taking place right now through July 27. A second two-week challenge is set to take place in October.

The campaign encourages Central Ohio commuters to use sustainable modes of transportation, such as carpooling, vanpooling, transit, bicycling, and walking. The goal is to mitigate traffic congestion and improve air quality.

Central Ohio commuters have taken full advantage of the opportunity in previous years –saving money, reducing single-occupant vehicle miles traveled, and diverting tens of thousands of pounds of greenhouse gases.

Having a challenge like this is very important during the warmer months of the year. During this time, the Central Ohio region is more likely to experience higher levels of ozone pollution. The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) issues daily year-round air quality forecasts and issues Air Quality Alerts the day before air pollution is forecasted to be harmful. By issuing these alerts, MORPC aims to help the public protect their health and take action to reduce their individual contributions to air pollution.

Emissions from vehicles are the greatest contributor to harmful ozone pollution in Central Ohio, and by using more sustainable modes of transportation, we can all breathe easier. During the Central Ohio Commuter Challenge, cleaning up your commute can net you great prizes at the same time.

Registered participants simply log their commutes online and are then eligible to win prizes every week day, as well as be entered to win grand prizes at the end of the campaign. Those who logged commutes last year will be happy to hear the process has been streamlined and improved.

To enter the challenge, simply register at makeyourmilesmatter.com and log each trip you take. The more you participate, the more chances you have to win. The grand prizes include cash gift cards of up to $300.
