National award given for MORPC’s efforts in forecasting future growth in the region

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) has been awarded a 2019 Excellence in Regional Transportation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) for its innovative approach to predicting where growth will occur in the region.

Every four years, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) develops a forecast of how future housing and employment will be distributed in Central Ohio. The land use allocation forecast for seven counties in Central Ohio is vital in identifying future transportation needs in the 2020-2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan.

“Our transportation modeling, and data and mapping teams worked collaboratively to develop a forecast that is ultimately rooted in how local communities are planning for growth. For this planning cycle, the project team introduced innovative approaches to better account for the uncertainty inherent in predicting future growth. The result is a community-, and data-driven glimpse into the future landscape of development in Central Ohio.”
Aaron Schill, MORPC Director of Data and Mapping

The award-winning project, Logistic Model Concept in Future Land Use Allocation Methodology, outlines how MORPC distributes household and employment growth around the region using local data sources, like community land use plans, and federal data sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau. The approach also uses a novel statistical method to determine how likely it is that a given area of land will see growth in the future. The data feeding the statistical model are factors that are known to either attract growth, such as tax incentives and access to transit, or deter development, such as floodplain zones or lack of sewer and water services.

The final population and employment forecasts will be available to view and download on MORPC’s online data catalog in June 2019.

NADO is a Washington, DC-based association that promotes programs and policies to strengthen local governments, communities, and economies through regional cooperation, program delivery, and comprehensive strategies. The Excellence in Regional Transportation Awards showcases organizations for noteworthy projects and practices in rural and small metropolitan transportation planning, program delivery, and special initiatives. Award winners will receive national recognition at the 2019 National Regional Transportation Conference which will take place June 17 – 19 in Columbus, Ohio.

According to NADO President Scott Koons, Executive Director of the North Central Florida Regional Planning Council in Gainesville, Florida: “The Excellence in Regional Transportation Awards highlight the important results of programs and projects like MORPC’s Logistic Model Concept in Future Land Use Allocation Methodology. Such initiatives are central to fostering quality of place, facilitating economic vitality, and improving mobility in our nation’s communities by promoting effective transportation planning and networks.”
