Federal Functional Classification
The Federal-aid system is identified by the functional classification of routes, which determine the route's eligibility for federal funding. Generally, federal highway funding cannot be spent on roads that are not at least classified as a “minor collector” in the urban area or a “major collector” in the rural area. Federal-aid eligible routes are identified in color on the map. "Local" routes are not eligible for federal aid. Federal functional classifications are assigned based on a roadway’s role in providing access and mobility in the region.
