The cities of Columbus and Worthington and Perry Township contracted with MORPC to conduct a study of State Route 161 between Sawmill Road and Olentangy River Road.

MORPC has completed the SR-161 Traffic Study and it has been reviewed by staff from the partner jurisdictions as well as the Franklin County Engineer’s Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

The study shows in order to improve the traffic congestion along the State Route 161 Corridor, the intersections of 161 at Linworth Road and Olentangy River Road must be improved. In addition, the at-grade railroad crossing west of Linworth Road must be addressed.

At the request of our jurisdictions, ODOT has agreed to take the results of the study and provide:

  • Conceptual drawings showing potential improvements at the intersections
  • Recommendations on a scope of improvements for a preliminary engineering study
    • A preliminary engineering study would involve extensive public input, additional field work and engineering evaluation to determine specific matters such as what road, bicycle, and pedestrian improvements should be designed and built as part of a project.

This additional information is necessary for our jurisdictions to determine if they will support and fund a preliminary engineering study. If authorized, ODOT has agreed to be the lead agency to manage the preliminary engineering study.
