Compiling Local Crash Data
In order to identify the areas that deserve the most attention in regard to traffic safety, a variety of data needs to be collected.
The majority of crash data is received from standardized police reports (OH-1) that are generated each time a traffic crash occurs and law enforcement responds. The Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) is responsible for compiling, analyzing and publishing crash statistics in the State of Ohio. The information is compiled from thousands of crash reports filed by local law enforcement agencies statewide. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and other state, local and federal agencies use this data to identify high-crash locations for engineering improvements, enforcement of traffic laws and public education.
Ensuring Timely and Reliable Data
ODPS has initiated a Traffic Records Coordinating Committee (TRCC), which is designed to keep all of the state and federal agencies that have an interest in traffic records informed as to what is happening around the state concerning traffic records. The responsibility of this committee is to meet and discuss common issues and dynamic changes in the direction of maintaining records for the State of Ohio. For example, it is one of TRCC's priorities to reduce the number of reporting mistakes. A second goal is to establish priorities of new projects that can affect the state. The committee is made up of a variety of state and federal agencies, including law enforcement, engineering, ODOT, ODPS, MORPC, NHTSA, and FMCSA, among others. The goal is to share information about current initiatives and projects to avoid a waste of resources as well as to determine a system that works for everyone.
Accessing National and Local Data Sources
Several sources exist that make traffic crash data available on the national and local levels.

In order to keep with the TRCC's mission to provide reliable crash data, MORPC has hired a company specialized in traffic safety analysis, TSASS, to clean up the data of all traffic crash records in the MORPC planning area from the year 2003 forward.
