Why is Accurate Crash Reporting so important to Safety?

MORPC, together with other regional stakeholders developed a short video for law enforcement officers to demonstrate the many different users of crash data and the importance of accurate crash data. Watch the short video below, or double-click on the video to view it in full screen.

Accessing Crash Data

The majority of crash data is received from standardized police reports (OH-1) that are generated each time a traffic crash occurs and law enforcement responds. The Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) is responsible for compiling, analyzing and publishing crash statistics in the State of Ohio. The information is compiled from thousands of crash reports filed by local law enforcement agencies statewide. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and other state, local and federal agencies use this data to identify high-crash locations for engineering improvements, enforcement of traffic laws and public education.

MORPC has hired a company specialized in traffic safety analysis to clean up the data of all traffic crash records in the MORPC planning area from the year 2003 forward. This data is available to all MORPC members. Please contact Joe Fish at (614) 233-4123 if you are interested.
