I-270/US-33 Northwest Freeway Study
A number of issues within the Northwest Columbus region prompt the need for a comprehensive transportation study. Rapid development occurring in this area for the past 20 years has led to pressure on the transportation system. Hilliard and Dublin both have doubled in size from 1990 to 2000. In total, the area from the Scioto River to Madison County and from Trabue Road/I-70 to SR 161 has grown in population from 37,000 to close to 70,000 between 1990 and 2000, and continues to attract residential and commercial development. Employment in this area has also grown from approximately 28,000 to 55,000 during that time period. Local communities including Hilliard, Dublin, Brown Township, Washington Township, Jerome Township, Plain City, Liberty Township, Concord Township and the city of Powell all have comprehensive plans, and many are updating these strategies to address these continuing growth pressures. As a result, MORPC, along with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), Columbus, Dublin, Hilliard, and Franklin and Union counties, has initiated the I-270/US 33 Northwest Freeway Study.
The primary objective of this effort is to develop long-term mobility solutions for the I-270 West Outerbelt area including the US 33 freeway west of I-270 to US 42. The study will look at how best to ease bottlenecks getting on and off the freeways from local streets as well as improving operations on the freeway itself. The solutions might range from land-use strategies that minimize the need to travel to transit enhancements, collector and arterial improvements, and freeway and interchange improvements. Study efforts will concentrate on improvements that most directly serve the mobility needs of the corridor's traveling public, and will identify costs, potential impacts, and short- and long-term implementation strategies.
