MORPC Showcases ‘Future Forward’ Theme Before Hundreds At State of the Region

Event Shares Bold Regional Vision For Central Ohio Growth

Nearly 1,000 elected officials, regional leaders, business partners, and residents packed the Hilton Columbus Downtown Friday for the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission’s (MORPC) 2026 State of the Region, a landmark event showcasing how the Midwest’s fastest-growing region is “Future Forward.”

One of Central Ohio’s most significant events, the State of the Region highlighted community accomplishments and shared insights on opportunities shaping the region’s growth.  From expanding housing programs and initiatives to bold new transportation plans, the event outlined a vision for a more connected and vibrant region.

"Central Ohio is growing, and with it comes responsibility to ensure it lifts up every corner of the region. By leaning into regional collaboration on transportation, housing, and economic development, we can ensure that as we grow bigger, we grow better—strengthening communities whether rural, suburban, or urban."

The annual event themed, Future Forward: Building a Region Ready to Compete, welcomed keynote speaker Greg Lindsay, a nonresident senior fellow with Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Future Urban Collectives Lab, Arizona State University’s Threatcasting Lab, and the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security.

“Central Ohio is building something rare in America right now — real economic momentum, a commitment to housing abundance, and a transit vision most metros twice its size lack. The next challenge is to match that ambition with the kind of places people want to live — connected neighborhoods, diverse housing options, and communities where people know their neighbors. That’s what separates a region that grows from one that thrives.”

Additionally, MORPC welcomed the return to Central Ohio of special guest speaker Ray LaHood, the former U.S. Secretary of Transportation. LaHood, an articulate national voice on passenger rail and other transportation topics, has been a guest of MORPC at events in the past.

LaHood praised Central Ohio for its momentum on bringing passenger rail to the region. Efforts are ongoing on this important issue to the region.

“You are about as well positioned as any place in the country to have passenger rail that connects your state, that connects this region and that will be an economic development boom like you’ve never seen before."

MORPC also presented three prestigious awards to local leaders driving meaningful changes across the region:
