MORPC Joins PLANNING2050 To Develop Transformative Tools for Planners

Planning for growth requires data and best planning practices to address sustainability and health for the region’s most vulnerable residents

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), Central Ohio’s regional council with more than 80 local governments and community partners, has joined the PLANNING2050 partnership.

PLANNING2050 (PLG2050) is a transformative initiative for planning practices that aims to have cities and communities generate their own commitments for intentional tracking of their goals and metrics. PLG2050 aims for cities and communities to ensure their critical systems are equitable, resilient, and carbon neutral by 2050.

"As Central Ohio grows, our priority is to support and work together with our communities as they plan and prepare for the coming decades. When planning for growth, we need the best data and planning practices to address sustainability and health as well as the equity of the region’s most vulnerable residents. PLANNING2050 helps connect and support the important work ahead."

Since PLG2050’s foundation in 2021, the American Planning Association–Sustainable Communities Division (APA-SCD) supported this effort and brought in multiple professional organizations such as The Congress for New Urbanism (CNU), American Institute of Architects (AIA), Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), United States Green Building Council (USGBC), International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP), and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).

"It is amazing to see such great leadership from MORPC when supporting PLANNING2050. Their decisive commitment and clarity with their metrics and goals, help us to kick off our database, but also helps with encouraging their members to be an active part of this initiative. We are working together on developing the dashboard platform details and the user interface, which gives us confidence that we are creating a transformative tool for the next generation of planners. MORPC has been a great leader throughout this initial process, and I am sure we will continue to have a long-lasting relationship as we start tracking and monitoring their commitments."

PLG2050 leverages the work of Sustainble2050 and is directly tied to the goals and objectives in the Regional Sustainability Agenda. As Central Ohio continues to lead through partnerships, PLG2050 will provide access to a national and international network and provide members the ability to learn from other cities and regions which are setting and working toward sustainability goals.

Sustainable2050 is a program that supports MORPC member communities’ sustainability efforts through direct technical assistance, collaboration, and recognition. MORPC works with Sustainable2050 communities to benchmark their efforts and track progress in achieving sustainability goals and objectives. The work with these communities gives MORPC an understanding of how all efforts make a collective impact on the quality of life in Central Ohio.

MORPC brings communities together to collaborate on best practices and to plan for the future growth and sustainability of the region. MORPC encourages sustainability through its Metropolitan Transportation Plan and Regional Sustainability Agenda, which helps to position Central Ohio and its local communities as national leaders in sustainability through creative partnerships, enabling innovative solutions and flexible processes.
